Y-90 Radioembolization

What is Y-90 Radio-embolization?

Yttrium 90 (Y-90) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat patients with primary liver cancer. These patients typically are not qualified, surgical candidates.

Y-90 treatments are also known as Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT Y-90). Like Chemoembolization, during SIRT, the physician will administer radioactive, Y90-bound micro-spheres into an artery at the groin. The Y-90 micro-sphere evades the artery which supplies the tumor(s) blood supply. The radioactive element Y-90 then bombards the tumors from the inside, delivering a lethal radiation dose to the cancerous cells.
