PICC Line

What is a PICC line?

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC), less commonly referred to as Percutaneous Indwelling Central Catheter. A PICC line is a catheter inserted into a vein in your upper arm. The inserted catheter is then advanced and positioned into a larger vein in your chest called the Superior Vena Cava.

This form of intravenous access is for patients who are expected to receive substances or IV medications and fluids over a prolonged period. Most commonly, PICC lines are used to administer chemotherapy or extended antibiotic therapy. This procedure allows the patient to minimize the number of needle sticks each time medication is being administered, decreasing risk for blown veins or blood clots.
