Varicocele Embolization

What is a Varicocele?

Like varicose veins, Varicoceles are enlarged veins located within the scrotum. These veins are called the Pampiniform Plexus, and they begin to dilate due to damaged valves that cause the backup and pooling of blood within the vessel.

Varicoceles generally form during the stages of puberty and are a relatively common occurrence found in roughly 20% of the adult male population. Anatomically, the left and right side of the testicles are not the same, with the majority of Varicoceles found on the left. Untreated Varicoceles can result in shrinkage of the testicles, decreased sperm count & quality and potential infertility issues.

At times, no symptoms are present with a varicocele. However, you may experience:

  • Visible, tortuous veins in the scrotal sac.
  • Swelling in the scrotum.
  • A visible or palpable lump on one of the testicles.
  • Recurrent, dull pain in the scrotum.

Although treatment may not always be deemed necessary, two of the most effective treatment options for Varicoceles when warranted are a Varicocelectomy or Varicocele embolization.

  • Varicocelectomy: A same day, minimally invasive procedure where a small incision is made in the abdominal wall near the original descend of the testicles. The damaged veins that are enlarged and swollen are then identified and cut. This method of treatment eliminates blood flow to the dilated veins, reducing symptoms and further dilation.

  • Varicocele Embolization: A small coil is then placed into the catheter and advanced into the Varicocele. The coil then blocks blood flow to the enlarged veins alleviating further dilation, pain, and symptoms. Varicocele Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure.
